DOROTHY JANE WILLIAMS
SMITH, 75
LAKELAND - Mrs. Dorothy Jane Williams Smith, 75, passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2010 due to cancer.
Dorothy Jane Williams was born on June 23, 1934 in Marion, in the southwest of Virginia. Her parents were Charles F. Williams and Francis (Romans) Williams. She married Joe Smith of Saltville Virginia and their only child Donna was born in August of 1954. Dottie settled into the life of an Air Force wife which meant many different assignments. They lived in North Carolina, Hawaii, West Texas, Eastern Virginia, Alaska, Germany, and Nebraska. Retiring from the Air Force, Dorothy, who liked to be called Dottie, moved to Lakeland in 1981. Dottie was an avid bowler for 45 years. She was many times an officer in the leagues and associations. She was a director of the military bowling association in Germany for 2 years and was a director of the LWBA here in Lakeland for 23 years. She traveled to many tournaments and was often a delegate to both state and national bowling conventions. Dottie had many down spots in her life, including a divorce and the loss of her daughter in an automobile accident in 2000. But despite these tragedies she retained her fierce independence, her infectious love of life, and her sometimes wicked sense of humor.
She is survived by her son-in-law and her bowling family.
A visitation will be held at Lakeland Funeral Home on Thursday, May 20, 2010 from 10-11am with a service to follow at 11 a.m. Entombment following service at Lakeland Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Good Shepherd Hospice, 115 S. Missouri, Suite 500, Lakeland, FL., 33815.
